Insomnia
my cousin is moving into my room for a month. My bed already sucks. it’s two stupid twin size mattresses on top of each other. they are kinda hard and I hate them. Now I’m being forced to separate the mattresses and put one on the other side of the room for her. okay i don’t mind it at all i love my cousin but now i’m going to be even more uncomfortable. and she won’t sleep well either!
what ways could I make it more comfortable??
please answer ALL questions:
and keep in my mind i have a limited income
1. does a boxspring make that big of a difference in terms of comfort?
2. is buying/acquiring a used boxspring as disgusting as a buying/aquiring a used mattress?
3. could I just buy a long piece of wood and put one under each mattress?? or a bunch of bricks?
4. what do you think of a bunch of milk crates side by side in place of a boxspring?
5. what is the purpose of a boxspring?
6. I’m worried about germs…how many germs get on mattress toppers like foam and feather pads? I tried to wash one in the past and it was destroyed ![]()
7. when I get my two mattresses back how else would you suggest making it more comfortable?
8. what are LOW priced options I have for my current dilemma?
9. what could I purchase used from a thrift store/craigslist or get donated to me from a stranger or place that wouldn’t be gross to help my bed situation?
10. I DONT WANT BED BUGS PLEASE!!
11. If I stuck something BETWEEN the two mattresses when they are stacked, what would that do??
12. please offer all advice on how to make an uncomfortable mattress as soft as possible
a. when it’s two mattresses stacked
b. when it’s one single mattress on the floor
I ask this ^^^^^ because she could end up staying a week to 50 years … I can’t tell at this point and want to be prepared for both
the only thing I have in mind is a bunch of blankets….that just doesn’t seem to sanitary…
13. which is more sanitary: a pillow topper or a bunch of blankets?
14. have you actually ever done any of the things you are suggesting??
15. tell me you love me.

Good heavens.
A box springs will give the mattress more support and make it firmer. Do NOT put bricks or milk crates under a plain mattress. You will end up with a ‘sway back’ mattress.
Separating the mattresses will actually make them softer. Go to WalMart or Target and buy a mattress topper. Buy one made of foam and do NOT wash it. Do not stack up blankets. They will just bunch up and make for a lumpy bed. Instead buy a mattress pad. These look like really thick fitted sheets. Get the best one you can afford. It will be washable. Wash it about every other time you wash your sheets.
DON’T buy a used mattress OR box springs. Ick. Just. ICK.
When/if you get both mattresses back, buy a piece of plywood and stick that between the mattresses if you want them firmer. You may also want to rotate the mattresses — every three months do the spin (head to foot) then the next three months do a flip (bottom side UP.) Since you have two mattresses and no box springs, I would also suggest you switch which mattress is on top every year or so. You could get another sheet of plywood (really thick kind) and put THAT on top of the bricks or milk crates, then the bottom mattress, then another plywood (if you want) then the top mattress, topped with the foam sheet and mattress pad.
And I don’t know you so I won’t say I love you but I do wish you well.
Put your cousin on a $15.00 air mattress on the floor. They are very comfortable, sanitary and easy to store.
Put a $5.00 foam topper on top of your mattress and it will be much more comfortable.
All problems solved for $20.00.
