I suffer from severe insomnia. I am prescribed Ambien 10mg and Klonopin 1mg at bedtime for sleep. I can take these 2 meds and it may take up to 4 or 5 hours later (if even that) before I feel the least bit drowsy. Unfortunately, my doctor won’t prescribe anything different and tells me that if I am having problems with those medications, I should try melatonin or L-tryptophan. I have tried both of the those and no luck. What other medications are available that are good for severe insomnia? And how do I convince my doctor to prescribe them?

Try homeopathy

Gabby, I also suffer from severe insomnia and also take ambien. I asked my dr. the samething, and he eventually prescribed me ambien CR. But after a while I became immune to that. my suggestion to you would be to take 1 ambien, 2 3mg melationin together. It’s safe and it does work. But if you are like me which you say it takes a while to get you to become drowsey, it may do that. Sometimes stress or depression can make you become more restless. You may want to talk to your dr. and see if he would prescribe you seroquel. I have also taken this and within 15 minutes of taking 25mg I was out like a light. Hope this helps!!!!!!
Melatonin worked for me when my circadian cycles were drastically messed up, but generally it doesn’t have much good use for severe insomnia considering it’s not just your body’s melatonin that is causing this. I used to have pretty bad insomnia a few years ago and I found that smoking a few bowls (less than a gram) of marijuana would usually get me relaxed enough so that I could fall asleep. I know that you probably are turned off by the idea of using an illegal drug for medicinal purposes, but honestly, Ambien and Klonopin are way less safe than marijuana. Alot of drugs that can be prescribed for sleep deprivation can be physically addictive and not good in the long run. Marijuana is not physically addictive and won’t cause any damage (besides maybe a sore lung in the start). Good luck buddy, Insomnia can be absolutely torturous, but trust me, once it’s gone, you’ll thoroughly enjoy going to bed every night.
I suffered from severe insomnia for 2 whole years and made me feel like going crazy. But all that suffering stops when my new doc prescribed me with Klonopin 2mg to be taken at night before I go to sleep. And I have been having a good night’s sleep every single night since then.
I have been taking it for 5 years already. I tried to reduce it to 1mg but it is not as effective and I went back to 2mg every night. No harm for you to try.
Take good care
